Getting Started with a Brand New Tenant

So you just signed up for your tenant and set up MFA for you global admin account. So whats next?

Initial Tenant Settings

From the beginning you will want to set your Organization Information

  • Browse to the Admin Portal and log in.
    • Under Settings -> Organization profile (Up top) -> Organization Information
      • Fill out your information in the top.
      • The key thing that needs to be set here is the Technical Contact.
          - Note: This user will receive all communication from Microsoft for any changes.
You are warned, there is a flood.

Next you'll want to check your Data location. This seems like a basic thing, but we've all had to deal with Compliance.

  • Under Settings -> Organization profile (Up top) -> Data Location
  • Confirm its listed to your country

Next we add Help Desk Information. If this tenant is for development purposes, feel free to add some fake information there. Definitely worth checking out.

  • Under Settings -> Organization profile (Up top) -> Help Desk Information
  • Check the Box and add the appropriate settings

Lastly, These options are optional. I only reference them as something to check.

  • Under Settings -> Security & Privacy -> Idle Session Timeout | Will log out users after a period of time from Office Web Apps
  • Under Settings -> Security & Privacy -> Password Expiration Policy | If your users are AAD only. On-Prem password policies take precedence.
  • Under Settings -> Security & Privacy -> Self Service Password Reset | Worth testing, works with AD Synced accounts as well
  • Under Settings -> Security & Privacy -> Sharing | This I uncheck for my tenants by default. Entirely operational needs.

Let's move on to add a domain!
